Experience the everyday magic that is Portugal in the seaside city of Olhão.

For this retreat I have curated our time in Portugal to take advantage of a couple of extra special details, and I am so excited to share them with you. We are staying in the stunning Casa Fuzetta in Olhão, a bustling seaside town on the Atlantic Ocean. More about Casa Fuzetta below…

I chose this town versus a retreat center in the middle of nowhere for several reasons, but mainly for simplicity and ease. There is no real need to rent a car, we are able to easily walk around town, and to hire inexpensive taxis wherever we wish to travel further afield. This also gives us a chance to live like the locals…albiet the fancy locals, but we all like EXTRA every once in a while–don’t we?

I love food and wine–(I know you do too!) and this retreat offers us a sweet balance of healthy vegetarian meals prepared for us at the Casa, and the chance to eat out at least once per day–really experiencing the cuisine Portugal is famous for. Staying at a private Casa also ensures that we can purchase and consume our own wine (in moderation, of course.)

Olhão is an ancient fishing town in the eastern Algarve (southern Portugal), which has escaped over-development and mass tourism. The old town is a warren of narrow cobbled streets, cubist fishermen’s houses and the faded grand houses of merchants who enjoyed commercial success at the end of the 19th century / early 20th century.

The daily covered markets are regarded as some of the best in Portugal, if not the world. The Saturday market is extra special and we have a day planned around experiencing it to it’s fullest.

Reconnect with a slower, more seasonal way of life, and engage with a genuine community of creative, like-minded souls. This retreat offers participants a taste of the everyday magic that is Portugal. I love Olhao for it’s down to earth salty charm, warm and hospitable people, creative community, cobbled streets and faded grandeur.

Why Food and Wine? “Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.” – Anthony Bourdain

A meal together is a chance for us to get to know one another. It’s a chance for us to get to know the place where we are immersing ourselves in for the week. Arguably, one of the best parts about going on retreat is not having to think about or make food. Not wondering where and when you will eat, it’s just there and it happens. In Olhão, we also have some chances to venture out on our own and explore foods that we want to try.

Breakfast will be made for us daily while we are in Portugal.  Lunches will be a combination of exploring town on our own and finding a lovely cafe to snack in, or wandering by the food market and picking up bread and olives, smoked fish and cheese to have on a blanket by the ocean. Two or three of our lunches are planned into our optional or included excursions. Six dinners are included in the retreat investment, five of them made by local chefs of the freshest ingredients at Casa Fuzetta.
